Endelig, må man jo si. Is? Stein? Men akk nei.
An icy trip around Brøgger
Ice covered Arctic landscape opens up for new possibilities. In sympathy for starving reindeers we went by “spark” to Dærten!
The trip started Thursday evening. The dogs were eager and so were we. Under sparkling aurora we flew over the ice and packed snow towards Geopol. After 1.5 hours – including a long photo-shoot – we could enter the cabin, thrilled and happy. This was fun!
Friday morning we kept going towards Dærten. In blowing snow and poor visibility, we admit a high factor of kamikaze for people and animals. Sudden stops in small drifts were the worst part. OMG! But after two hours - including a hard battle against Frost's keen hunting instinct - we arrived at the lukewarm cabin. Leif Arild had already gone, but we were happy anyway. We were ready for rest and food. Some areas of heavy snow convinced us that continuing to Jensebu on the glacier was no good idea. Additionally the snow was now falling densely. It would be a hard walk home no matter what!
We were happy for the snow. Finally, one could say! But a lot of courage was required the next morning. Return by “spark” in 25 cm of fresh snow? The 25 kilometers were quite strenuous; - a lot of snow and no tracks. You could never see what was hidden under the snow; - ice, stones or more soft snow? Again we had some areas with tremendous high speed followed by sudden stops. On the first stop Kjell-Ove was even thrown over the “spark”! Luckily he was not hurt, but seeing stars as he landed in the snow. We had to be a bit little bit more careful...
The way home took us six hours. Halfway carrying the sparks, we were quite happy to reach the road by the airport. Soon after we could enjoy the delicious Kings Bay dinner and look forward for powder skiing on Sunday. A happy thought until the rain started pouring down...
